Exploring How Collaboration Shapes Science Learning in Children

In this ongoing project, researchers from the CDE, University of Copenhagen, and Aarhus University examine how children’s collaboration affects their approach to science. The team uncovers how group dynamics influence students’ persistence and confidence in scientific exploration. Funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation with DKK 7.6 million, the project gathers experts from computer science, science education, and education research to measure and understand how students support or inhibit each other during group tasks. A core objective addresses students’ mixed experiences with science, especially when experiments don’t yield the expected results. The project focuses on how children’s social interactions impact their resilience in science learning. The team gathers data using advanced techniques to track group behavior—such as who talks to whom and how students handle challenges—while respecting privacy. '

My main focus with Zaibei Li is developing technology with Martin Toft Jensen, Patrick Sturm, Diana Medea, and the rest of the team.

About me

Spikol has been investigating different aspects of Technology-enhanced Learning. He has researched, designed, and developed systems that engage learners, support teachers, and provide insights into learning. He is an Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen in the Department of Computer Science and a fellow at the Center for Digital Education. His current research explores how people collaborate with physical computing to inspire learners to explore computational tinkering and thinking. Over the last decade, he has focused on multimodal learning analytics to understand how small groups of students use mobile phones to conduct science in the field.
